In December 2020, Uniti Group Limited (“Uniti”) acquired the South Brisbane and Velocity estates FTTP networks from Telstra Corporation Limited. OptiComm, Uniti’s Wholesale network subsidiary is currently carrying out the work to upgrade and migrate services across on to the OptiComm network.

As part of this work, OptiComm has signed an agreement with Universal Communications Group (UCG) to help provide end-to-end service for the design, build, construction, and commissioning of new optical line termination racks (OLTs) to support the upgrade of services in the South Brisbane and Velocity estates.

Under the agreement, UCG will perform design and deployment services, including materials and logistics management, rack assembly and testing, site make ready works, rack installation, integration and site acceptance testing and overall project management for this phase of the project.

The works will be carried out within 72 Telstra exchanges which service the 128 Velocity estates located across all major capital cities in Australia. Each of the exchange deployments will be completed in alignment with the transition roadmap for services on the Velocity and South Brisbane FTTP estates.

Subscriber services are expected to start transitioning onto the XGS-PON enabled Uniti FTTP network in July 2022, with the customer migrations taking approximately 12 months to complete.

“This is an exciting project for both UCG and OptiComm, the planned upgrades and subscriber migrations will benefit approximately 50,000 active customers by providing residents access to fast broadband built to support their increasing bandwidth needs. We’ve chosen to work with UCG because of their experience and track record in delivering high quality broadband design and construction services at scale. We have high confidence in their ability to meet the deployment timelines.”

Andy Page Opticomm’s Chief Technology Officer said.

In announcing the news, UCG’s Chief Executive Officer Muralee Siva said that

“UCG is thrilled to be working alongside Uniti and OptiComm to support their growing fibre infrastructure assets. With our strong track record and expertise in building and maintaining telecommunication networks over many years, we are looking forward to playing an active role in successfully transitioning the South Brisbane and Velocity network for OptiComm.”
