In 2011, Telstra entered into an agreement with the Queensland Government for the sale of the South Brisbane exchange site to enable the construction of a new children’s hospital. It was decided that all copper services connected to the South Brisbane exchange would be upgraded to a new fibre to the premise (FTTP) network, providing fast reliable connections to businesses and residents of South Brisbane, Southbank and West End. To meet the Queensland Government’s schedule requirements, all copper-based services were to be migrated before the end of 2012.
As a renowned MDU specialist and an approved panel contractor, UCG was engaged by Telstra to assist with the deployment of this network upgrade. Over a period of 18 months UCG surveyed, designed and constructed over 260 brownfield multi dwelling units (MDUs) and connected over 16,000 end user premises (EUPs). UCG was one of three companies that connected all MDUs within the South Brisbane footprint.
UCG provided connections for museums, art galleries, commercial buildings, residential multi-dwelling units, shopping centres and many other complex buildings. Each project was unique and required bespoke solutions to retrofit fibre distribution terminals and other network devices inside each premise. All projects were designed and constructed to Telstra’s design standards.
UCG surveyed, designed and constructed over 260 brownfield multi dwelling units (MDUs) and connected over 16,000 end user premises (EUPs).
Our construction scope of works included all operation activities to install and connect Telstra ‘blue’ fibre cable from specified joints in the network to the building (including civils, cabling, splicing, testing and commissioning). Each lead in back haul would range from 30 metres up to 500 metres in length. Overall, UCG installed over 4.8 kilometres of external fibre cable.
In addition to design and construction expertise, UCG provided a full end-to-end service including land access and compliance, contractor management and end user engagement. Individual appointments were arranged by UCG’s technicians for each end user.
